2020 was such a stressful year, as far as politics and media were concerned. I'm a believer in pluralism, and living with and respecting people with differences in belief. But in 2020, it felt like that was an impossibility for the future of America. It felt like everywhere I looked, hyper-partisan rage was mounting on all sides, and it made everything about our society feel perilous and on-edge.
I stumbled into Isaac's work in the weeks leading up to the 2020 election, and it was a breath of fresh air. Each issue made it abundantly clear that every issue of national importance, from guns to covid to election integrity, were deeply complex, and that when you stopped to really listen, everyone had compelling good-faith arguments. It felt like a safe space for people interested in truth, rather than ratcheting up anger at "the bad guys."
In a political news landscape still dominated by tribal culture war dynamics, Isaac is one of the few writers who fully trusts his audience. He treats readers like adults who can handle the messiness of conflicting perspectives of complex topics. There is no spoonfeeding of easily digestible and emotionally palatable narratives. There is only the imperfect search for truth and understanding in a complex world.
